9 Tips for Preventing a Commercial Burglary

While you may never be able to make your commercial enterprise 100% secure, there are multiple steps you can take to reduce the risks of your business being victimized by criminals:

  1. Have a commercial high security safe professionally installed

If your business processes high volumes of cash, it can make it a prime target for criminals, and the only way to ensure that the money is kept as secure as possible during the times it’s on the premises, is by storing it in a commercial safe. Having the commercial safe professionally installed can also mean that even the most determined burglar won’t be able to get into the safe, or make off with it, let alone find it.

  • Ensure that high risk inventory is securely stored

Not making it easy for thieves to steal high value items is the best way to protect your valuable inventory, and you can do this by storing them in a commercial grade safe, removing all high-risk window display items before the store is closed for the day, moving easy to grab items away from doors and consider adding security tags to certain items.

  • Install security devices

Alarm systems and security cameras are not only great for catching criminals in the act, but they can even act as a deterrent and discourage criminals from targeting your business.

While some alarms are clearly visible, others may not be so, and even if they are visible, it never hurts to display the fact that you have robust security systems in place, as this alone can prevent criminals from targeting the business.

  • If you don’t keep cash on the premises, let it be known

For whatever reason you don’t keep large amounts of cash on the premises (or any cash at all), advertise the fact with a clearly visible sign to deter criminals.

  • Lock up and lock up well

Locking doors and windows is a no-brainer for any business owner, but there are additional locking measures you can take to secure your commercial premises, such as:

  • Putting bars on the windows
  • Using a couple-cylinder deadlock
  • Closing in windows that may have been targeted previously
  • Light it up

Buildings that are well illuminated are far less likely to be targeted by criminals, so if you can reduce the shadowy areas around your premises, you’ll give thieves and vandals less places to hide.

  • Consider hiring a security guard

Security guards are a valuable investment for many business owners, and having a static or patrolling guard has long been proven to be a fantastically effective deterrent for crime.

  • Keep your business clean and tidy

A business that looks well taken care of, is always going to be less attractive to burglars, and by keeping the area in and around the premises clean and tidy, should help to show that your business is being patronized frequently.

Commercial burglaries can be devastating, but by taking additional steps to secure it, such as those listed above, you can help protect what you’ve worked hard to build up.
