Most quality safes convert cleanly, in homes, gun safes and commercial safes alike. The check is mechanical: the door’s bolt work geometry, the spindle path and the lock mounting must match the new lock, which we confirm from your safe’s make and model and sometimes from photos of the open door’s interior.

The honest exceptions: very old safes with non-standard lock geometry may need adapter work or may not convert economically. Small consumer safes with a lock built into the door are replaced, not converted. And a safe whose bolt work is failing from wear or corrosion gets assessed first, since a new electronic lock on dying bolt work just builds a prettier failure. Conversion is also generally reversible, because the standard footprint accepts a mechanical lock again.

Electronic or dial? A quality listed electronic lock is a serious lock. Look for a UL listing on any safe lock you buy (UL 768 for mechanical combination locks, UL 2058 for electronic locks).
